WHAT IS AN ADU?

Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, are small, independent living spaces built on the same property as a main home. Whether it’s a backyard cottage, a converted garage, or a second-floor addition, ADUs are a flexible and valuable way to add living space, increase property value, and accommodate growing needs. With changing lifestyles and rising housing demands, ADUs offer an efficient solution for homeowners looking to maximize their space. Whether you need extra room for extended family, a private home office, or even a rental unit for additional income, an ADU can provide the perfect balance of functionality and creativity.

ADUs can be built attached to or detached from your primary residence. They can be rented out or, with the always evolving code requirements, even be sold. Because they can be built detached they are often a cheaper solution to adding square footage to your existing home without touching the original structure. In short, there are many ways and reasons to build an ADU.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BUILDING AN ADU?

  • ADUs can be rented out to generate an additional income, they can be space for caregivers, grown children, elderly parents.

  • ADUs are typically much smaller than primary homes, reducing material and labor costs.

  • Simpler layouts mean less complexity in design and construction.

  • Many cities have eased zoning and permitting requirements for ADUs to encourage housing development.

  • ADUs often face fewer regulatory hurdles compared to new single family homes.

  • Some jurisdictions waive parking requirements, impact fees, and setback restrictions for ADUs, making them easier to approve and build.
